Wrinkle Reducing 5 Minute Facial

Aging is both a blessing and a curse.  I am thankful for each and every day I have.  At the same time, I see the changes that are the result of growing older.  Most noticeable to me and all women of a certain age, are changes to the face.  This is what you first see when you look in the mirror, it is literally staring you in the face.  For some of us, filler, Botox injections, and/or surgical intervention is not an option.  So, what can we do?  I am going to share what I call the wrinkle reducing 5 Minute Facial.

I am not one to spend large amounts of time taking care of my face, putting on makeup, or fixing my hair.  I never have been.  When I was young enough to have to time to do this, I didn’t want to (lazy? lol).  Now that I am older, I simply have no time or desire to learn how.  To those of you who have it all together, I applaud and envy you.  For anyone like me, don’t lose hope, gravity and time don’t have to take such a big toll on our faces.

If you watch TV or read magazines, you will see ad after ad for creams, lotions, and serums to make you look years younger.  Maybe they do, maybe they don’t.  Most likely, the ones that actually show some effect have a chemical component that causes a temporary plumping affect which makes your wrinkles look less pronounced.  Collagen, glycolic Acid, Hyaluronic Acid, Retinol, Vitamin C are a few of the more common components in the highest rated anti-aging ingredients you will find.  You will also see a laundry list of filler chemicals, fragrances, water, oil, etc.  The combination and quality of ingredients is the most important aspect of an anti-aging product.

So how can you choose?  With prices that can range upwards of $100 or more for a 1-3-month supply, face creams are big business.  Is Le Mer, La Prarie or Estee Lauder moisturizer any better than ones by Neutrogena, ROC, or Oil of Olay?  How do you choose which one to get, the anti-aging, anti-wrinkle, or moisturizing?  Do you need SPF15, SPF30, or no sun protection?  Do you have to buy the entire line of products to achieve any effect? These are all valid questions that will have different answers depending who you ask.

People who can afford to spend hundreds or thousands a jar on face products will absolutely swear that the product is worth the price.  Who am I to argue, as I cannot afford to try them.  I am certain they must see some result, or they would not continue to use them.  If you can afford these, you probably have other options not available or affordable to the rest of us, including regular facials, microderm abrasion (DIY version) and some of the enhancements mentioned above.  For the rest of us, just know that it is not necessary to spend that much!

Which type of cream do you need?  The optimal moisturizers and anti-aging/wrinkle creams are different for everyone.  The trick is to find one that you like that is affordable for your skin care regiment.  This may require you to try a couple different ones in your chosen price point to see which looks best after a certain period of time.  I recommend using one for a full month or two to determine its efficacy. Once you find one you like do you need the entire product line?  No.  You can pick and choose the ones that you think you will use!  Not going to apply eye cream every night?  Not going to use the specially formulated facial scrub and makeup wipes?  Then don’t spend the money.  There is no point in buying things that never get opened.  I do strongly urge you to choose a face cream that has an SPF component, at least 15, 30 if you have a fair complexion.

I personally have tried several creams that range in price from $10 an ounce to $100 an ounce.  I have returned time and time again to my less expensive and favorite brand.  I use Oil of Olay Age Effects.  I have several eye creams, but I don’t use them much, although I do like them.  I also have an extremely expensive little bottle of YSL serum that I use quite sparingly.  I use my face cream morning and night, but I do not have a day and night version.  I just use one.  These are my personal preferences, and they work for my minimalist approach to skin care.

There are many things that factor into how well a woman ages, genetics, sun damage, lifestyle to name a few.  But God willing, we will grow older and see the effects of time on our faces.  We can’t stop their eventual appearance, but we can take care of our skin, so the changes don’t age us too soon.  How do we do this?  First and foremost, drink plenty of water!  Proper hydration is essential to keeping skim moisturized and the wrinkles from forming.  If you don’t like plain water, try flavored water, you can make your own! Quality food choices, exercise, and a healthy lifestyle are all important as well.  In addition to these behaviors, I have found a great way to help reduce wrinkles and their associated signs of aging, and it can be done in 5 minutes a day!

There are three layers of skin, the epidermis which is the outermost layer, the dermis, the middle layer, and the hypodermis, the bottom most layer.  The epidermis is comprised of skin cells which are constantly shedding and pores.  The hypodermis is made of mostly connective tissue and fat.  The dermis is comprised of sweat and oil glands, hair follicles, blood vessels, and the all-important of collagen and elastin production.  Collagen is the most plentiful protein in the body, and it has many “jobs”.  Collagen provides structure to skin, as we age, our bodies produce less collagen, and less firm skin is one of the effects we see.   Elastin is, as its name sounds, responsible for the elasticity of skin (as well as other roles).  As we age, the epidermis thins out and amount of elastin diminishes.  This causes skin to sag.  The combined loss of collagen and elastin produces the aged, sagging, wrinkled skin we see. My wrinkle reducing 5 minute facial will help combat these signs of agin.

It would seem logical to increase production of these or get them from an outside source. The healthy diet I previously mentioned helps to do this with naturally occurring vitamins and minerals in food.  Taking vitamins also helps, although vitamins from food are more easily absorbed and utilized by the body than ones in a pill form.  All those lovely creams, lotions, and serums I mentioned earlier is another source, but as I mentioned, more expensive is not necessarily better.

My wrinkle reducing 5-minute facial consists of applying your facial cream by gently massaging the skin of the face in a circular motion.  You can do an upwards or downwards direction, I personally use an upwards motion.  I use my favorite skin cream, Oil of Olay Age Effects, and some of my YSL serum and massage them gently into my skin. This massage not only helps rejuvenate cells, it promotes collagen growth, which “fills out” the face to reduce wrinkles.  Do individual parts of the face separately, starting at the jaw line.  Cheeks, upper lip, and forehead, especially above brow.  Be very gentle around the corner and under eye at the top of the cheekbone.  Do not pull at the skin under your eye.  Skin in very thin there and you can do more harm than good.

Do this massage technique morning and night.  You can use a jade roller applying gentle pressure to the same areas instead of your fingers.  The cool temperature of the stone acts to reduce swelling in addition to the massage benefits.  What exactly are these benefits?  Stimulation of blood flow, reducing swelling, more luminous skin, and reduced wrinkles.  (Aloe Vera can be a fairly low cost face cream substitute for the massage).

My wrinkle reducing 5-minute facial may not produce dramatic overnight or even “permanent” results.  If you are consistent in your daily massage, however, these results will certainly be maintained.  It will probably take around 5-6 weeks to see noticeable results.  You will love how bright and smooth your face looks.  As you continue to massage and stimulate the skin on your face, the rejuvenation and overall health of your skin will improve.  This is the goal and beauty of my simple 5-minute facial.  In just a few (5) minutes a day, you can create an ongoing technique for improving and revitalizing your skin.  People will tell you how great you look, how much younger.  They will all ask what you have done to look so beautiful.  But we can keep that our little secret!

XO, Coco
